Squad Progression
Understanding how swimmers move through our squads.
How is my child's progress monitored?
Unlike learn to swim programs, we don't have scheduled assessment weeks or certificates. Each swimmer's progress is monitored continuously by their coach. When a swimmer is ready to move up, you'll receive an email advising the new squad and start date. In some cases, we'll invite a swimmer to trial in the next level before confirming the move.
How long will my child be in their current squad?
There's no fixed timeline — it varies depending on age, skill level, speed, attendance, focus, and attitude. Each individual squad page includes a typical progression pathway to give you a general guide.
It's also worth knowing that most squads have subgroups within them. Swimmers are placed in the most appropriate lane for each session based on what's being trained that day — so progression happens incrementally, not just when a squad changes.
Will I receive feedback on my child's progress?
Progress is reflected in squad placement and lane allocation. Each term we hold a Time Trials night, giving swimmers the opportunity to race in a supportive environment and track their improvement over time. Results are published on our website following each event.
Can I request a squad change?
Squad placements are made by coaches based on what's best for each swimmer's development. If you have a question about your child's current level, please contact us.
What if my child wants to compete?
Competitive swimming is available through M1 Swimming Club. Refer to our Compete section for more information.
