Tateswim Squads

Tateswim’s Squad Programs are designed to suit a wide range of swimmers training for a variety of reasons, catering for both competitive and non-competitive swimmers.

Swimmers are allocated to the appropriate squad based on various factors including age, ability, commitment level, goals and psychological/physical developmental level.

At all squad levels, Tateswim members are encouraged to enjoy the swimming experience and the good health that comes with regular swimming training and exercise.

Squad Programs

Masters (Adult squad)
The Tateswim Masters Squad is suitable for adults with a strong swimming ability. Swimmers may train for recreation/fitness or competition. The training is suitable for swimmers participating in masters level swim meets and open water events. Swimmers normally train 1-2 sessions per week.
National Performance
National Performance Squad is suitable for committed national level competitive swimmers aged approximately 12-17 who have achieved (or are likely to soon achieve) Australian Age National qualifying times. Swimmers are expected to train 6-8 sessions per week. Swimmers will train with the objective of achieving Australian Youth Performance* Squad Bronze, Silver or Gold Qualifying times. Dry-land training forms part of the program. M1 membership required.
State Performance
State Performance Squad is suitable for state level competitive swimmers aged approximately 14+. Swimmers are required to attend 5-7 sessions per week. Dry-land training forms part of the program. Swimmers will train to compete in state level competitions in multiple events. M1 membership required.
State Age
State Age Squad is suitable for swimmers aged approximately 12-16 who have qualified for, or are close to qualifying for, state level competition. Swimmers are required to attend 4-6 sessions per week. Dry-land training forms part of the program. Swimmers will train to compete in state level competitions. M1 membership required.
Senior
Senior Squad is suitable for experienced swimmers aged approximately 15+. Swimmers are required to attend 2 sessions per week and may train up to 4. The program includes some dry-land training (e.g. circuit work/body balance/dancing, etc). The squad is suitable for swimmers training for fitness, cross-training, open water swimming and personal development.
Youth Fitness
Youth Fitness Squad is suited to swimmers aged approximately 12-15 primarily training for fitness/ recreation, strength development and stroke development/advancement. This squad is also suitable for swimmers who wish to use the benefits of regular swimming to compliment another sport. Swimmers are required to attend 2 sessions per week but may train up to 4 sessions per week. Swimmers have the option to participate in competitive swimming at club/district level if they wish.
Junior State
Junior State consists of swimmers up to the age of about 13 who have qualified for, or are close to qualifying for, state level competition. Swimmers are expected to train 4 sessions per week upon entry to the squad then work their way up to 5-6 sessions per week. Dry-land training forms part of the program. Swimmers will train to qualify for, and compete in, state level competitions. Swimmers will be encouraged to work towards achieving Gold level according to Swimming Australia’s Junior Excellence* Program. M1 membership required.
Junior 1
Junior 1 is designed for swimmers aged approximately 12 & under aiming to qualify for junior state level competition. Swimmers will be required to train 3 sessions per week (with the option to do 5). Dry-land training will form part of the overall training program for this level. Swimmers will be encouraged to work towards achieving Bronze/Silver/Gold level according to Swimming Australia’s Junior Excellence* Program. Swimmers will be expected to compete in state qualifying meets and the All Junior Competition. M1 membership required.
Junior Fitness
Junior fitness is suited to swimmers aged approximately 11-12 primarily training to improve and maintain fitness, wellbeing, skills & technique. Swimmers are required to attend 2 sessions per week (with the option to train 3 as ‘Junior Fitness Plus’ swimmers). Swimmers have the option to participate in competitive swimming at club/district level if they wish.
Junior 2
Junior 2 is suitable for swimmers aged approximately 8-11 who are willing to train 2 sessions per week (with the option to train 3 as ‘Junior 2 Plus’ swimmers). Focus is placed on stroke technique development, improvement of skills (including turns and dives), development of strength/endurance, and enjoying the social element of being part of a squad. Swimmers will be encouraged to work to- wards achieving Green/Bronze level according to Swimming Australia’s Junior Excellence* Program. Swimmers will be encouraged to compete at club and district level meets.
Junior 3
Junior 3 is suitable for young swimmers aged 8-10 who have reached the upper levels of the learn to swim program and wish to start regular squad training. At this level, focus is placed on stroke development and implementing good training practices. Swimmers are required to attend 2 sessions per week.

Squad Structure

Tateswim's squad structure is represented below in a flow chart. The chart highlights the progression and movement from squad to squad.

Junior 2 and 3 levels consist of subgroups named after our coaches' favourite Victorian beaches. Having subgroups of the same standard training at different times and locations gives families more flexibility and convenience.

Competitive Squads: Junior 1, Junior State, State Age, State Performance and National Performance Squads are Tateswim's competitive swimming squads. Swimmers in these squads are expected to join the M1 Swimming Club and attend swim meets as outlined by coaches. Swimmers in other squads may join M1 and compete if they wish.
